The Traditional Approach: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
Before the advent of sophisticated JavaScript frameworks, developers created Chrome extensions using the fundamental trio of web technologies: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. This conventional approach involves the following steps:
- Manifest File: The
manifest.json
file is the heart of any Chrome extension, defining its metadata, permissions, background scripts, content scripts, and other configurations. - HTML Files: These are used to create the extension’s UI, including popup interfaces, options pages, and background pages.
- CSS Files: Stylesheets provide the visual styling for the extension’s user interface, ensuring it looks polished and professional.
- JavaScript Files: JavaScript handles the logic and interactivity within the extension. It can manipulate the DOM, respond to user actions, and interact with Chrome’s extension APIs.
This approach is straightforward and leverages basic web development skills. However, as extensions grow in complexity, managing state, reactivity, and code organization can become cumbersome. This is where modern JavaScript frameworks come into play.
Advantages of Using a Framework
1 Enhanced Structure and Organization
Frameworks like React, Vue, and Svelte bring structure and organization to extension development. They encourage the use of components, which encapsulate HTML, CSS, and JavaScript into modular, reusable units. This promotes code reusability and maintainability.
2 Reactive Data Binding
Modern frameworks offer reactive data binding, automatically updating the user interface when the underlying data changes. This simplifies the development process, especially for complex extensions with dynamic content.
3 State Management
Frameworks provide powerful state management solutions, such as Redux for React or Vuex for Vue. These tools help manage the state of your application in a predictable and centralized manner, making it easier to handle complex interactions and data flows.
4 Community and Library Support
One of the significant advantages of using a JavaScript framework is the vast ecosystem of libraries and community support available on npm (Node Package Manager). Developers can leverage a wide range of pre-built components, utilities, and tools to accelerate development and add advanced functionalities to their extensions.
- UI Components: Frameworks have rich libraries of pre-built UI components, such as Material-UI for React or Vuetify for Vue, enabling developers to create professional-looking interfaces quickly.
- Utility Libraries: Libraries like Lodash, Moment.js, and Axios provide handy utilities for data manipulation, date formatting, and HTTP requests, respectively.
- Development Tools: Tools like Webpack, Babel, and ESLint integrate seamlessly with frameworks, enhancing the development workflow with features like hot reloading, code transpilation, and linting.

Frameworks often include performance optimizations out of the box. For instance, virtual DOM in React minimizes direct DOM manipulation, leading to faster updates and a smoother user experience. Svelte, on the other hand, compiles components into highly efficient, imperative code, resulting in minimal runtime overhead.
Single Page Advantage: Simplifying Chrome Extension Development
One of the key advantages of using a single-page application (SPA) framework for developing Chrome extensions is the inherent simplicity and efficiency that comes from having a single-page structure. Unlike traditional web applications that require search engine optimization (SEO) and multiple pages to navigate, Chrome extensions operate in a self-contained environment where these concerns are largely irrelevant. This makes the SPA approach particularly well-suited for extension development.
No SEO Concerns
Chrome extensions do not need to be indexed by search engines, which eliminates the complexities associated with SEO. This allows developers to focus entirely on functionality and user experience without worrying about how content is crawled or ranked by search engines.
Simplified Routing
In conventional web development, managing multiple pages can be complex, requiring a well-thought-out routing system to handle different URLs and navigate between views. This complexity increases as the number of pages grows, making state management and user navigation more challenging.
Lets Build You Chrome Extension
Make sure you have Node installed in your computer. You can download it here.
Open your terminal, PowerShell or command prompt in the folder where you want you chrome extension files to be. Enter and run the command below.
npx build-chrome-extension
This is an npm library that we built to make it easily to use to build chrome extensions with your framework of choice. Its open source and the repository is here if you desire to contribute it. But let’s be honest we both know your not going to contribute anything.
Run this command to build your project.
Go into the folder created for your extension using the cd
command. After that run this command to build your project.
npm run build
The reason we are building the project is because the chrome browser needs access to the web files to run the extension.
Installing your chrome extension
Setting up chrome
First you need to go to the extension dashboard or you can type chrome://extensions in the url bar.
An alternative is navigating there with the option menu.
To your top-right you will see a toggle button for Developer Mode make sure that is on.
Adding your extension to chrome
To you top-left you will see a button that say Load unpacked.
When you click that button choose the dist folder (contains the extension code).
Pinning the Extension
To pin the extension on the app bar, click the puzzle icon and then the pin icon extension to the your extension name.
